Browse Wins Wednesday’s Featured Mulholland Springs Purse
LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 18, 2017) – Phipps Stable’s homebred Browse swept to the lead in mid stretch and cruised to a 1½-length victory over Sensitive to win Wednesday’s featured $69,000 Mulholland Springs Purse for fillies and mares before a crowd of 10,219. (Click here for a replay of the race.)
Trained by Shug McGaughey and ridden by Jose Ortiz, Browse covered the 1 1/16 miles on a firm turf course in 1:44.44. Browse was the third winner of the afternoon for Ortiz.
Browse is a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Medaglia d’Oro out of the Grade 2-winning
A.P. Indy mare Daydreaming. The victory was worth $41,400 to Browse, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Imagining, and increased her earnings to $184,252 with a record of 11-3-4-1.
Browse returned $10.80, $5.60 and $4.60. Sensitive, ridden by Florent Geroux, returned $4.80 and $3.80 with Now Power paying $6 to show under Julien Leparoux.

CHALON WHEELS BACK QUICKLY, HEADS FIELD OF 11
IN $250,000 LEXUS RAVEN RUN
Rockingham Ranch’s Chalon, second here two weeks ago against older fillies and mares in the Thoroughbred Club of America (G2), headlines a field of 11 3-year-old fillies entered Wednesday for Saturday’s 19th running of the $250,000 Lexus Raven Run (G2).
The Lexus Raven Run, contested over 7 furlongs on dirt, will go as the ninth race on Saturday’s 10-race program with a 5:30 p.m. ET post time. First post time Saturday is 1:05 p.m.
Trained by Peter Miller, Chalon returns to face 3-year-olds after finishing 1¾ lengths behind multiple graded stakes winner Finley’sluckycharm in the Thoroughbred Club of America.
Paco Lopez, who was aboard Chalon in the TCA as well as for the filly’s 6½-length romp in the Jersey Girl at Belmont in June, has the mount Saturday and will break from post position eight.
One filly who chased Chalon in the Jersey Girl and is back for more is John Oxley’s Pretty City Dancer. Trained by Mark Casse, who has won three stakes during the first eight days of the 17-day Fall Meet with two for Oxley and one for Oxley’s wife, Debby, Pretty City Dancer won the Spinaway (G1) last summer at Saratoga. In her lone Keeneland start, she was sixth in this spring’s Central Bank Ashland (G1).
Corey Lanerie has the mount and will break from post position six.
Other prominent runners Saturday include Dorothy Matz’s homebred Tequilita, a two-time graded stakes winner at the distance.
After finishing seventh in the Kentucky Oaks (G1), Tequilita returned to sprinting and produced a third-place finish in the Test (G1) and won the Charles Town Oaks (G3). Trained by Michael Matz, Tequilita will be ridden by Feargal Lynch and break from post position seven.
Another filly to watch is St. Elias Stable’s Nonna Mela.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Nonna Mela won the Adirondack (G2) last year. In two starts this year, she won her debut against older horses in which she beat Malibu Stacy, last year’s Lexus Raven Run runner-up, and then ran second in the Prioress (G2).
Chris DeCarlo has the mount Saturday and will break from post position four.
The field for the Lexus Raven Run, with riders and weights, is: Yorkiepoo Princess (Edwin Gonzalez, 120 pounds), Overture (Jose Ortiz, 118), Pinch Hit (Jon Court, 118), Nonna Mela (DeCarlo, 118), Happy Mesa (James Graham, 118), Pretty City Dancer (Lanerie, 118), Tequilita (Lynch, 120), Chalon (Lopez, 118), Classy Tune (Florent Geroux, 118), Torrent (Ricardo Santana Jr., 118) and Miss Sunset (Julien Leparoux, 120).
TONER TAKING TWO SWINGS AT KEENELAND GRADED STAKES THIS WEEK
When trainer Jimmy Toner shows up at Keeneland, he usually has a strong hand. This week is no exception as he has Darby Dan Farm Racing’s Manitoulin for Thursday’s $100,000 Sycamore (G3) and the Phillips Racing Partnership and Pam Gartin’s Defiant Honor for Friday’s $150,000 Pin Oak Valley View (G3).
Both horses arrived at Keeneland Monday morning with Toner assistant Tiffany Webb minding the shop. Manitoulin has been here before with a win and a second in two starts. Defiant Honor is making her first Keeneland stop.
Manitoulin, a 4-year-old son of Awesome Again and champion Soaring Softly, comes into the Sycamore off a daylight allowance victory Sept. 20 at Belmont Park. He started 2017 with an allowance win here, and his lone off-the-board finish in five starts was a fourth-place showing in the Arlington Handicap (G3).
“He is improving,” Webb said. “As a 3-year-old, his focus was on other things and he was gelded over the winter. The family of Soaring Softly are late developers and they get better as they get older.”
Defiant Honor, a 3-year-old full sister to multiple stakes winner and three-time Grade 1 runner-up Recepta, finished second in the Jimmy Durante (G3) at Del Mar but has been off the board in two graded stakes tries this year.
“She had an excuse in the Lake George (G3),” Webb said of the sixth-place finish at Saratoga. The filly had minor throat surgery to correct a breathing issue. “Then she came back and won the Riskaverse at Saratoga impressively.”
In her most recent start, Defiant Honor finished eighth in the Sands Point (G2) run at 1 1/8 miles at Belmont on Sept. 16.
“We came back a little too quick in the Sands Point,” Webb said. “We were trying to get an invitation to the Queen Elizabeth (II Challenge Cup Presented by Lane’s End-G1 last Saturday at Keeneland).
“We gave her a little more time for this one. She is like her sister Recepta in that I think she is better at a mile and the mile and a sixteenth (of the Pin Oak Valley View) should be right in her wheelhouse.”
