CTBA WINNER NAUGHTY TIGER TOPS FIELD IN BARRETTS DEBUTANTE

CYPRESS, Calif. – Naughty Tiger will try for her second stakes win in a row when she faces four opponents in the $100,000 Barretts Debutante Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Scheduled for 6 ½ furlongs and restricted to 2-year-old fillies offered for purchase at any Barretts sale, the Debutante is the fifth of nine races. Post time Saturday is 2 p.m. Scheduled post time for the Debutante is 3:58 p.m.

Los Alamitos will also offer as many as three seats to the 2019 National Thoroughbred Racing Association National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas with a live money contest Saturday.

The cost to enter the Los Alamitos Fall Qualifier is $400. Of that amount, $100 will be placed in the contest prize pool with the remaining funds going towards a live-money wagering card.

Contestants must enter prior to post time for the first race Sept. 15. Players can begin entering the contest once track gates open at 9:30 a.m. that morning.

Tournament races will include the entire card at Los Alamitos with permitted wagers including win, place, show, exactas and daily doubles beginning on races 1-5.

Each entry must bet at least $50 per race on six races during the contest to be eligible for prizes, but there is no wagering limit.

The player with the highest bankroll at the end of the day will be declared the winner and the player with the second highest bankroll will be the runner-up.

The winner will receive 50% of the prize pool, which will be capped at $10,000. The remaining payoffs: 20% (2nd place), 15% (3rd place), 7.5% (4th place) and 7.5% (most money wagered).

Three NHC berths will be up for grabs if the contest has more than 60 entrants. If less than 60, two NHC spots will be on the line.

Owned by Brian Blackburn, Shannon Hunt, Mike Marsden, Antony Murigo, Darrin Albert and trainer Edward Freeman, Naughty Tiger followed her maiden victory at Santa Anita June 14 with a 5-1 upset in the CTBA Stakes Aug. 1 at Del Mar.

Purchased for $40,000 at the Barretts sale in April, the daughter of Smiling Tiger and the Red Giant mare Naughty Nightie prevailed by 1 ¼ lengths in the CTBA and her second win in three starts pushed her bankroll to $98,880.

Trained by Brian Koriner for Blinkers On Racing Stable, Robert Georgetti, Gene Hacker and Cheryl Harris, Square Peggy is 1-for-2 with earnings of $37,200 after defeating maidens in her second start Aug. 15. The win was flattered when runner-up Sneaking Out returned to score by 10 ½ lengths in her next start Sept. 2.

A $160,000 purchase in April, Square Peggy is a daughter of Square Eddie and the Momentum mare Puff Pastry.

Owned by Jerry Caroom and trained by Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale, Shanghai Barbie finished fifth in her debut, defeated 22 lengths by Sneaking Out.

A Shanghai Bobby filly out of the Memo mare Sacharissa, Shanghai Barbie was purchased for $60,000 at the Barretts Select sale in 2017.

Trained by Peter Miller and owned by Gary Hartunian’s Rockingham Ranch, Kim K will make her second start after finishing fifth in her Del Mar debut Sept. 2.

The daughter of Will Take Charge and the Trippi mare Trip for A.J., who was purchased in April for $335,000, earned $1,200 for her effort in a race captured by Florida invader Lady Dude.

Derby Royalty is a three-start maiden who was third against $50,000 state bred maidens Sept. 7. Owned by Gary Folger and Susan Derby and trained by Ruben Gomez, the Haynesfield filly out of the Fusaichi Pegasus mare Prospecting Peg has banked $3,945. She was an $8,000 buy at the Barretts sale last October.
