Belgian Wins Wednesday’s Featured Mulholland Springs Purse

LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 17, 2018) – Three Diamonds Farm’s Belgian, a runner-up in his previous four starts, grabbed the lead from Tommytom inside the sixteenth pole and outdueled that rival for a half-length victory in Wednesday’s featured $71,000 Mulholland Springs Purse for 3-year-olds and up before a crowd of 9,178. Trained by Mike Maker and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, Belgian covered the 5½ furlongs on a yielding turf course in 1:04.06.

Belgian is a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Candy Ride (ARG) out of the Allen’s Prospect mare Angel Gift. With a career mark of 15-3-7-1, Belgian boosted his earnings to $191,430 with Wednesday’s $42,600 winner’s check.

Belgian returned $10, $5.40 and $3.60. Tommytom, ridden by Florent Geroux, returned $19.20 and $10.60 while finishing three-quarters of a length ahead of Totally Boss, who paid $7 to show under Brian Hernandez Jr.

Racing continues Thursday with a nine-race program beginning at 1:05 p.m. ET. Thursday’s feature is the $100,000 Sycamore (G3) for 3-year-olds and up going 1½ miles on the turf. Slated as the eighth race, post time for the Sycamore is 4:57 p.m.
