HOFBURG, PRIME ATTRACTION TOP FIELD OF SEVEN
FOR CLOSING-DAY HAGYARD FAYETTE
Juddmonte Farms’ Hofburg and West Coast invader Prime Attraction headline a field of seven entered Wednesday for Saturday’s 61st running of the $200,000 Hagyard Fayette (G2), the closing-day feature of Keeneland’s 17-day Fall Meet.
Run at 1 1/8 miles on the main track, the Hagyard Fayette for 3-year-olds and up will go as the ninth race on Saturday’s 10-race program with a 5:30 p.m. ET post time. First post time is 1:05 p.m.
Trained by Bill Mott, Hofburg finished third in the Belmont (G1) behind Triple Crown winner Justify in June and in his most recent start was fourth in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1). Hofburg tuned up for Saturday’s race with a 5-furlong work in 1:00.60 Monday at Churchill Downs.
Jose Ortiz will have the mount on Hofburg, who will break from post position six. Mott has won the Hagyard Fayette twice: Go Between (2007) and Newsdad (2012).
Hofburg is the lone 3-year-old in the race, a race won 10 times by a 3-year-old with the most recent being Blame in 2009.
DP Racing’s Prime Attraction, who arrived at Keeneland Tuesday from his Southern California base and galloped here Wednesday morning, chased likely Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) favorite Accelerate in his past two starts in the Pacific Classic (G1) and Awesome Again (G1).
Trained by James Cassidy, Prime Attraction is graded stakes-placed on turf and dirt in 2018 with his most recent victory coming in last November’s Native Diver (G3) at Del Mar going 1 1/8 miles.
Kent Desormeaux has the mount on Prime Attraction and will break from post position one.
The field for the Hagyard Fayette, with riders and weights from the rail out, is: Prime Attraction (Desormeaux, 121 pounds), Nice Not Nice (Gabriel Saez, 121), Hence (Ricardo Santana Jr., 123), Scuba (Tyler Gaffalione, 121), Leofric (Florent Geroux, 121), Hofburg (Ortiz, 118) and Rated R Superstar (Brian Hernandez Jr., 121).

BREEDERS’ CUP SPRINT HOPEFUL MR. CROW WORKS THREE-EIGHTHS
KRA Stud Farm’s Mr. Crow completed his major training for the $2 million TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) by working 3 furlongs in :35.20 over a fast track after the morning renovation break.
Working on his own, Mr. Crow covered the final quarter-mile in :23.60 and galloped out a half-mile in :49.20
“It was just a maintenance move and it was fine,” trainer Ben Colebrook said.
A Keeneland sales graduate, the 4-year-old son of Tapizar has won one of six starts in 2018 since joining the Colebrook barn. In his two most recent ventures into Grade 1 waters, he chased probable Breeders’ Cup Sprint favorite Imperial Hint in the Vanderbilt at Saratoga and the Vosburgh at Belmont Park.
“I know he is going to be a longshot and we are taking a shot,” Colebrook said of Mr. Crow, who finished second in the Vosburgh beaten 1¼ lengths. “I may put blinkers on him and ideally I would like to see him in the first wave.”
Mr. Crow and Colebrook’s other Breeders’ Cup pre-entrants Knicks Go (Sentient Jet Juvenile) and Limousine Liberal (Sprint or Dirt Mile) are scheduled to ship to Churchill Downs early next week.

KEENELAND SALES REPRESENTED BY 89 HORSES
PRE-ENTERED IN BREEDERS’ CUP
Eighty-nine horses that are graduates of Keeneland sales were pre-entered in the 35th Breeders’ Cup World Championships being held Nov. 2-3 at Churchill Downs. They include 13 of the 19 horses pre-entered in the event’s richest event, the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1): Accelerate, Catholic Boy, City of Light, Collected, Gunnevera, Lone Sailor, McKinzie, Mendelssohn, Mind Your Biscuits, Pavel, Roaring Lion, Toast of New York and West Coast.
Entry for the Breeders’ Cup races will be Monday, Oct. 29.

BREEDERS’ CUP SIMULCAST AVAILABLE AT RED MILE
Red Mile welcomes racing fans to watch and wager on the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, being held Nov. 2-3 at Churchill Downs.
On Thursday, Nov. 1, advance wagering will begin on the full Friday and Saturday Breeders’ Cup cards.
On Friday, Nov. 2 a number of mutuel windows at Red Mile will open at 8 a.m. ET. Churchill’s program, being called “Future Stars Friday,” begins at 12:55 p.m. with four undercard races.
The Breeders’ Cup races that day are the Juvenile Turf Sprint (3:21 p.m.), Juvenile Fillies Turf (4 p.m.), Tito’s Handmade Vodka Juvenile Fillies (4:40 p.m.), Juvenile Turf (5:22 p.m.) and Sentient Jet Juvenile (6:05 p.m.).
On Saturday, Nov. 3, Red Mile’s clubhouse opens at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $55 per person and include a seat, program and a buffet from 1-5 p.m. Call 859 255-0752 or email mary.white@redmile.biz to make reservations.
Post time for Churchill’s first race is 10:45 a.m. The Breeders’ Cup races are the Filly and Mare Sprint (noon), Turf Sprint (12:38 p.m.), Dirt Mile (1:16 p.m.), Maker’s Mark Filly and Mare Turf (2:04 p.m.), TwinSpires Sprint (2:46 p.m.), Mile (3:36 p.m.), Distaff (4:16 p.m.), Turf (4:56 p.m.) and Classic (5:44 p.m.).
GALLOPING OUT
Trainer Neil Drysdale said Calumet Farm’s Vexatious, winner of Sunday’s Rood & Riddle Dowager (G3) via disqualification, would run next in the $100,000 Red Carpet (G3) at Del Mar on Nov. 22. The Red Carpet is contested at 1 3/8 miles on the turf.

LIFE IS SWEET FOR CAPT. CANDYMAN CAN IN SECOND CAREER
As a racehorse, Capt. Candyman Can was known for his quickness, but now in his second career the 12-year-old son of Candy Ride (ARG) is valued for his calmness.
A premiere sprinter in his prime and runner-up in the 2009 Phoenix (G3) at Keeneland, Capt. Candyman Can is a stable pony in the barn of his former trainer, Ian Wilkes. In a western saddle, “Captain” is ridden most mornings by Wilkes’ assistant Nicola Ward as they accompany the racehorses to the track.
“He loves his job and loves the attention he gets,” Ward said. “He still has plenty of spirit about him.”
Capt. Candyman Can capitalized on his earnings power in his 22-race career that spanned six years and produced nearly $800,000 with an 8-2-3 record. His resume includes a start in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita and victories in four graded stakes. A Keeneland sales graduate, Capt. Candyman Can campaigned for David Zell, Stephen Zell, Rosemary Rauch and Joseph Rauch.
The gelding made his final start in the spring of 2013 and was sent to the 120-acre farm that Ward and her husband, Jeremy Paul, own in Waddy, Kentucky, about midway between Lexington and Louisville. Ward said he was so timid around his pasture mates that she allowed him to roam on the lawn away from the other horses.
“One time we came home and he was standing on the deck,” she said. “At that point I thought, ‘You’ve got to go back to the field.’ ”
About three years ago, Ward decided to ride Capt. Candyman Can at the farm. All went well so she took him to the Wilkes barn, where the gelding soon realized his speed no longer was required.
“We took it very easy with him,” Ward said. “I just rode him back and forth to the track at first and he took to it right away. Probably a lot of the reason is the amount of time he had away from the track before he came back.”
When the Wilkes stable heads to Florida for the winter, Capt. Candyman Can receives time off with Ward at the farm, where he divides his time between the barn and pasture.
“We thought he would be just a pet for life; we really didn’t think he’d take to this,” Ward said. “He’s a great asset to have at the track.”

Keeneland Library exhibit “From the Vault: Historic Tracks.” This exhibit features 26 select images from the Library’s archive of tracks from the early 20th century. Pioneering Turf photographers John C. Hemment and Charles Christian Cook are featured, with additional representation from Joel Clyne Meadors and Robert Lee McClure, among others. The Library is open to the public Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET.
The online exhibit “Photo Treasures from the Keeneland Library” presents nearly 100 other historic images of U.S. racing facilities in its “Tracks Gallery.”

Saturday, Oct. 27
Sunrise Trackside – Halloween Edition. Thoroughbreds and their human connections begin the day well before sunrise. See what they’re up to during Sunrise Trackside, a free, family-friendly event with activities for all ages: Breakfast With the Works features breakfast for purchase and trackside commentary (7-8:30 a.m.) while racehorses train on the main track; children’s activities in the Kids Club Corner (7:30-9:30 a.m.); free guided Keeneland tours (7:30-10 a.m.); Paddock demonstration with a miniature horse from the Kentucky Horse Park (9 a.m.); and Q&A session with a jockey in the Paddock (12:05 p.m.).

The Headless Horseman will appear in the Paddock at 9:15 a.m. and on the track during the afternoon races. That morning, children are encouraged to dress up and participate in the costume contest in the Paddock following the Headless Horseman.
