Saturday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot Surpasses $2.68 Million
Spring Meet Leaders Zayas, Joseph Jr. Team Up for Ohio Derby
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – The 20-cent Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot continued to build to life-changing proportions Friday, when the popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the 50th consecutive racing day at Gulfstream Park.
A Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot of $2,683,443.53 will be up for grabs on Saturday’s 12-race program that will get under way at 12:45 p.m.
Rainbow 6 tickets will all six winners Friday were each worth $11,316.20.
The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
A total of $278,925 was bet into the Rainbow Friday, when wagering on the six-race sequence started with a carryover of $2,616,516.18 from Thursday’s program.
There will also be a Super Hi-5 carryover of $7,908.58 heading into Saturday’s program.
Spring Meet Leaders Zayas, Joseph Jr. Team Up for Ohio Derby
Edgard Zayas and Saffie Joseph Jr., the leading Spring Meet rider and trainer, respectively, will team up at Thistledown Saturday for a quest to capture the $500,000 Ohio Derby (G3) with Math Wizard.
The 3-year-old son of Algorithms finished fourth in the Oaklawn [Park] Invitational in his most recent start May 4.
“It was a good effort for him. He went pretty even the whole race. I thought he was in a good spot and he had a good trip, but he probably likes to sit off it a little bit more and use his short run at the end,” Zayas said.
Joseph claimed Math Wizard for $25,000 out of an 18 ½-length romp at Gulfstream Jan. 31. After finishing second in an optional claiming starter allowance, the Kentucky-bred colt finished fourth behind victorious Tacitus in the Wood Memorial (G3) at Aqueduct April 6.
Math Wizard is scheduled to clash with Owendale, the third-place finisher in the Preakness Stakes, and Long Range Toddy, the Rebel (G2) winner who finished a troubled 18th in the Kentucky Derby.
Joseph tops the trainer standings with 20 wins, six more than Ralph Nicks.
Zayas leads the jockey standings for Gulfstream’s Spring Meet with 63 wins, seven more than Emisael Jaramillo with six racing days remaining.
Jockey Reylu Gutierrez will make a return trip to Gulfstream Saturday, hoping to benefit from Zayas’ absence while named on eight horses.
Gutierrez, who enjoyed success at Gulfstream as an apprentice in 2018 before venturing to New York and New Jersey, has won four of 10 races during his previous trips to Gulfstream during the Spring Meet.
