Correll’s Corner: New additions to Kentucky Derby Top Ten

This is week two of my rankings for the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. I’ve added two new ones and dropped another and that makes 11 colts and I’ll explain why when I get to that colt.

Authentic (Into Mischief) won the San Felipe on March 7 at San Felipe with ease and is the top colt on the West Coast. He has 60 points.

Ete Indien (Summer Front) was in charge from the beginning in taking the Fountain of Youth on Feb. 29 at Gulfstream Park. He has 54 points.

King Guillermo (Uncle Mo) ran away from the field at the top of the stretch in the Tampa Bay Derby on March 7. The winning time (1:42.63) was the third fastest in the history of the race. He is not Triple Crown nominated, but I’m sure his connections will spend the $6,000 to make him a late nominee. He has 50 points and he needs to run one more time before the Derby.

Tiz The Law (Constitution) won the Holy Bull and is pointing to the Florida Derby on March 28. He has 22 points.

Nadal (Blame) won the Rebel at Oaklawn Park on March 14 and he did it in front-running style. His fast early fractions made the final time a bit slow for a mile-and-a-sixteenth (1:44.97), but he still held off the closers. It was his first time around two turns and he’s unbeaten in three starts. He has 50 points.

Mischievous Alex (Into Mischief) won the Gotham on March 7 at Aqueduct. He is slated for the Wood Memorial on April 4. He has 50 points.

Gouverneur Morris (Constitution) has an impressive allowance win under his belt and is headed to the Florida Derby. He has no points.

Enforceable (Tapit) was second in one division of the Risen Star. He has 33 points.

Sole Volante (Karakontie) was second in the Tampa Bay Derby, but was almost five lengths behind the winner. He has 30 points.

Honor A.P. (Honor Code) is a well-thought-of colt that ran second in the San Felipe after a long layoff. I think this colt will make some noise later on. He has 20 points.

Field Pass (Lemon Drop Kid) is the extra colt and he’s here because he won the Jeff Ruby on March 14 at Turfway Park. He’s not Triple Crown nominated and also won the Dania Beach on grass at Gulfstream Park. Let’s see if his owners put the $6,000 to make him a late nominee. He has 20 points.
